What is an SRT File?

SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is the most widely used subtitle format for videos.

SRT Format Example

First line of lyrics

Second line of lyrics

Each subtitle has a number, timestamp range, and text content.

Manual SRT Creation is Painful

Creating SRT files by hand means typing timestamps in a specific format while constantly pausing and rewinding your audio. Here's why most people switch to automated tools:

❌ Manual SRT Creation

  • Open text editor, type sequence number
  • Play audio, pause at exact millisecond
  • Format timestamp as 00:00:00,000
  • Type the text, find end time, repeat
  • Test in player, fix timing errors, repeat

⏱️ Time per video: 1-3+ hours

✓ With LyricTime

  • Upload your audio file
  • AI transcribes and timestamps automatically
  • Review and fix any errors in visual editor
  • Export properly formatted SRT
  • Import into your editor or platform

⚡ Typical timing pass: ~3-10 minutes (varies by edits)

Understanding SRT Format

SRT is a simple text format that's been the standard for subtitles for decades. Understanding its structure helps you troubleshoot and customize your files.

SRT File Structure

// Sequence number (starts at 1)
1
// Start time --> End time
00:00:12,340 --> 00:00:15,670
// Subtitle text (can be multiple lines)
First line of your subtitles
// Blank line separates entries
2
00:00:15,670 --> 00:00:19,120
Second subtitle entry

Timestamp Format

SRT uses HH:MM:SS,mmm format with comma before milliseconds (unlike VTT which uses a period).

Example: 01:23:45,678 = 1 hour, 23 minutes, 45 seconds, 678 milliseconds

Common Issues

  • Wrong encoding: Always use UTF-8
  • Period vs comma: SRT uses comma in timestamps
  • Missing blank lines: Entries must be separated
  • Overlapping times: Causes display issues
